Overview of Kedarnath
Kedarnath, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, is one of India's most revered
pilgrimage sites. Situated at an altitude of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), it is home to the
sacred Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas
and an essential part of the Chota Char Dham Yatra. Believed to be over 1,200 years old, it
was built by the Pandavas and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century.
The journey to Kedarnath involves a 18 km trek from Gaurikund, but pilgrims can also opt for
ponies, palkis, or helicopter services. The temple remains open from April/May to November,
closing during winter due to heavy snowfall. The scenic surroundings, including Vasuki Tal,
Bhairavnath Temple, and Chorabari Tal (Gandhi Sarovar), add to its allure. Kedarnath is not
just a pilgrimage site but also a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers, offering serene
landscapes, snow-capped peaks, and spiritual tranquility.
The 2013 flash floods caused extensive damage, but the temple stood resilient, reinforcing
its spiritual significance. A visit to Kedarnath offers a divine experience, blending
mythology, devotion, and breathtaking Himalayan beauty.
